Latest Windows Phone W7 Mango update confuses
GoMobile News has only just stumbled upon the very latest updates to the Windows Phone 7.5 (W7 Mango) mobile OS for the Nokia Lumia range of smartphones. It’s curious. What we would regard as massive benefits have been played down whereas tiny breakthroughs get major billings. Here’s a good example. If you flip the handset’s face down then it will automatically end an incoming call. Um ,great stuff. This glosses over the fact that finally, after a lot of pressure from users and GoMobile News itself, Microsoft has finally provided Nokia with the ability to turn the handset into a local Wi-Fi hotspot so that other devices can share your 3G connexion. Tethering is great but who exactly was asking for the ability to attach multiple files to a text message?
We’re not sure but Microsoft somehow manages to push this feature of the upgrade right up to the top.
Not all the advertised extra apps are available to all Lumia models either.
The interesting point about this upgrade was the notification which GoMobile News received about it.
Instead of an automatic message to the handset itself, we were actually alerted to the upgrade via an email message from Nokia.
A very important point here is that the upgrade isn’t OTA (Over-the-Air). You have to connect the handset to a desktop computer – PC or Mac, to get the upgrade.
We’re not sure how we managed it but somehow an upgrade between Windows Phone 7.5W7 Mango – also known as Update 7.10.7720.68 and the very latest version of WP7 for the Lumia – Update 7.10.8773.98 was missed out.
So instead of waiting to install just one upgrade GoMobile News found itself installing two upgrades. A very time consuming experience it was, too.
Now the upgrade blurb describes a facility which most of us had thought was there in the first place.
Apparently now you can export phone contacts to the SIM card. And vice versa, well –ish, you can.
What GoMobile News found most disappointing was the set of extra apps which the update is supposed to provide. Go here to look at the official list.
There are supposedly a bunch of spanking new apps available from the ‘Nokia Collection’ which you will spot when you initially access the Marketplace app store.
The camera upgrade arrived successfully but two other ‘new’ apps aren’t yet available for the Nokia Lumia 800 which GoMobile News has in its sticky mitts.
In particular we were looking forward to having a a facility which Nokia describes as ‘Contact share’.
This should enable you to easily forward a business card on your Lumia handset to somebody else via text.
Yes, we were surprised that this new app isn’t available for the Nokia 800.
However, if you log onto the Windows Phone Marketplace, you’ll find plenty of free alternatives all when you search for Contacts Share.
Quite frankly we found it very strange that the email mentions the Wi-fi tethering facility but no other update guides even remotely mention it.
